The SDL Forum Society decided to offer grants for projects related to the promotion of SDL and MSC. The funds were granted prior to the execution of a project and released subject to milestone reports and other validation of the progress of the work.

The result of the first (so so far only) grant was at http://case.ispras.ru/research/eds1.htm but unfortunately this site is no longer active (26 Jan 2005).

The work was done by Alexei Ragozin, who sadly died before the work was completed. The grant was made postumously to Alexlei's parents for the work done.

The Board of Society considered whether there should be further grants. This was discussed at the AGM of the Society in Copenhagen June 2001. The resolution was that may be considered again sometime in the future, but the decisions were made instead to offer paper prizes (at SDL05 in 2003) and a design contest prize (at SAM2002). Further contests took place (sponsored by SOLINET).

It was proposed to spend some of the Society's reserves in accordance with its aims defined in §2 of the Constitution. In particular, it was suggested to look into cheaper alternatives regarding Web hosting. Also, there should be a bidding process for activities funded by the Society. Possible activities are:

  • SDL specific research
  • Support of SDL tools
  • Redesign of the Society Web pages
  • Promotion of SDL, e.g., by articles, best paper awards, Wiki

The grant for 1998 will be in the order of 5000 DM. The SDL Forum Society Board may choose to grant more or less than this amount subject of the quality of the applications.
The announcement of the grant receivers will take place at SAM'98 in the end of June.
